Leaders in Gambia are urged to stop executions

Leaders in the Gambia have been urged not to go ahead with the execution of prisoners.
The appeal has come from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay who says she was deeply disturbed by execution of nine prisoners by firing squad on Sunday.

The United Nations human rights chief says the moratorium that had been in place for 27 years in the Gambia was something the country could be proud of and was respected for.
President Yahya Jammeh has said that the remaining 39 prisoners on death row would be executed by mid-September.
Navi Pillay says that is extremely worrying and raises serious questions about the motivation behind the sudden rush to execute.
She urgently calls on the President and relevant authorities in the Gambia to heed international, regional and local calls on the government not to carry out further executions.
