UN chief stresses diplomatic solution to Iranian nuclear issue

The issue of Iran's nuclear programme should be resolved by diplomacy and negotiations, says United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
Mr. Ban, who has just concluded his visit to Iran, was responding to the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) on the issue.
The IAEA has reportedly said that Iran has doubled the production of enriched uranium at the Fordo nuclear site and has hampered the agency's ability to inspect a military site.
A statement by the Secretary-General's spokesperson says it is regrettable that Iran has yet to reach an agreement with the IAEA on a plan to resolve all outstanding issues.
"The Secretary-General emphasizes that there can only be a diplomatic and negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue which should be pursued through a reciprocal, step-by-step process. This must include measures by Iran aimed at building international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear programme. The Secretary-General used the opportunity of his participation in the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement to convey the clear concerns and expectations of the international community on this matter."
"There are suspicions that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons but it insists that its programme is for peaceful purposes." says Mr Ban Ki-moon, in his interview speech.
