Behind the Scenes of 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 4: Location, Location, Location [Exclusive]

The gorgeous scenery in "The Vampire Diaries" may seem magical, but finding those perfect locations doesn’t take magic — just patience and a good eye!In this exclusive clip from the Season 4 DVD, location manager Danny Sconyers talks about how he and his team find those breathtaking spots, like the island that housed Silas's tomb.

"When we get a script, we figure out exactly what we're going to try to accomplish here at our stages and what we need to find outside of it," Sconyers explains. Then comes scouting, when his team chooses several location options until "the right ones are found and picked."

It isn't easy; Silas's island was a remote, majestic place that Elena, Damon, and crew had to track down. Finding a location like that — free of electric lines, houses, people, and roads — can be tough these days.

"The challenge was we couldn't see any kind of inhabitants," he says. "It had to be just an island, period."

"The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Fourth Season" is available on DVD and Blu-ray starting Tuesday, Sept. 3. Season 5 will premiere Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
